There’s a variety of homestead tax exemptions available for Texas residents that can help homeowners save thousands of dollars on their property taxes each year. But did you know if you’re a homeowner aged 65 or older that there’s a special exemption just for you? Whether you’ve lived in the Lone Star State your whole life or you’re new to the area and planning to spend your golden years here, as a homeowner, you don’t want to miss out on this valuable exemption. Here’s how it works:
School districts automatically grant a $10,000 exemption for qualified persons of 65 or older. An additional advantage is the school tax ceiling. Once you qualify, your taxes will not increase unless you make improvements to your home. Most cities, counties and other taxing units offer 65 plus homestead exemptions of at least $3,000 or more even though they are not required to do so.
When To File
The delinquency date is normally February 1st; however, you can file for any homestead exemption for up to two years after the delinquency date. If you are over 65 or disabled, you qualify for the exemption on the date you turn 65 or the date you are declared disabled. To receive the exemption for that year, you must apply for the exemption no later than one year from the date you qualify or one year after the delinquency date.
